One of my favorite times of the year has arrived. A time when family and friends gather to spend quality time. These gathering moments can be made even more special through creativity of setting the Thanksgiving table.

The weather has been extra cooperative this season allowing for scavenging around in the woods searching for items from nature to enhance the table setting display.  Collecting colorful leaves and fallen pinecones make for some fine basket centerpiece fillers.  Beginning with an old picnic basket filled with some of nature’s bounty is how I started the inspiration from my tablescape.  Noticing the golden yellow leaves and orange fruit of the season’s past beach roses, stems cut would provide the tall piece for the centerpiece.  Utilizing small clippings from the beach roses and placing them directly in the center of the white plates would add color to the setting.  Snipping still flourishing rosemary placed in clear jars adds aroma at each setting and will serve as hostess gifts for guests to indulge in.

Finding that my picnic basket was too large for my centerpiece, I quickly improvised and used the sprouting amaryllis plant to begin with.  Adding a beach rose stem to the plant was a quick and easy solution.  Texture was brought to the table by using burlap fabric as a table runner. This will provide a natural ground for a wide range of plate colors and tableware giving a more casual look.  Thanksgiving is also a time when special dishware makes an appearance after being stored away all year.  Heirloom china that is being used may have a color scheme that can inspire your table setting as well.  I prefer to use solid color plates whether white or a color.  A solid field makes for a nice display of food selections on the plate.

5 table embellishment tips:

  • Collect colorful fallen leaves and pinecones or colorful plant clippings
  • Utilize small glass jars and bottles to display a herb sprig or cutting at each place setting
  • Make use of outside plantings that have changed color with the season, bringing color to the table
  • Solid color plates provide a neutral background for food selection
  • Colorful napkins can be used as placemats on the table

Don’t underestimate the use of your kitchen island for additional seating if needed.  Make this space an extension of your dining table with the same theme. Building your tablescape can include some favorite platters and bowls with or without color.  I like to use my special silver serving pieces scored at an estate auction.  These pieces always spark conversation with their unique filigree and artistry design.

Having fun with designing the holiday dining table is always something I look forward to.  For me a walk in the woods collecting natures fallen gifts brings me back to my childhood days.  Whether hosting Thanksgiving or a guest at a family member’s home, this fun activity is a special creative outlet for everyone.   Wishing much peace and harmony to all during this Thanksgiving holiday.
